MIG Welding Stainless Steel - Lincoln Electric

Wire diameters of 0.030", 0.035", and 0.045" are most commonly used with this process. Gases for pulsed arc welding are argon plus 1% oxygen, the same as used for spray arc welding. These and other wire sizes can be welded in the spray transfer mode at lower average current with pulsed current than with continuous weld current.

Welding Guidelines for Stainless Steel and Nickel Alloys

Stainless steels have a rate of thermal expansion 50% greater than carbon steels. Nickel alloys expand to a lesser degree. Use frequent tacks, or skip welding to reduce stresses. Minimize weaving techniques which result in slower travel speeds and higher heat input. Stringer beads are most desired when welding on stainless steel or nickel base

Stainless Steel MIG Welding with Compact Welders

However, you will need to use a stainless steel MIG wire. I would recommend 0.030" diameter, on either a two pound or ten pound spool. For your particular appliion, use a 308LSi grade. In general, the grade of wire you use depends on the type of stainless steel base material you are welding.

Can I mig weld stainless steel - Miller Welding Discussion

I think I am over my head on the stainless idea. I am running a millermatic 172 setup for steel. I think it is a 75%/25% argon mixture. I was told to use a flux core wire to make my life easier, and was hoping I could do the same with Stainless. I am only looking to weld small decorative items, like a 2''x3'' fountain with pretty thin metal.
